Dr. Ouma Congo, MBChB, is a second-year MPH student in the Women and HIV/IARTP Program at the UW, funded by the Fogarty International Center. Dr. Ouma Congo is a research scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Centre for Microbiology Research in Kisumu. In this role, he develops clinical standard operating procedures, executes them, ensures participant safety and general health, and submits safety reports to both sponsors and local ethics committees. His research has included examining how depressive symptoms affect adherence to oral Pre-Exposure prophylaxis among adolescent girls at risk of HIV acquisition in Western Kenya. For his thesis research, Dr. Ouma Congo’s will conduct a cross-sectional evaluation of depressive symptoms, sexual risk behavior, and PrEP adherence among adolescent girls and young women in Western Kenya. His primary mentors include Dr. Elizabeth Bukusi (KEMRI), Dr. Ruanne Barnabas (Harvard), Dr. Maricianah Onono (KEMRI), Dr. Susan Graham, and Dr. Elizabeth Harrington (UW).
