The aim of Sonya's research is to develop CRISPR-Cas tools to manipulate the inactive X chromosome, either by engineering long-range DNA loops to induce escape from X inactivation or by physically repositioning the chromosome within the nucleus. These tools could then be used to treat diseases that arise from aberrant gene expression from the inactive X chromosome, such as Rett syndrome and systemic lupus erythematous. Sonya's project is a collaboration between the Zalatan, Disteche, and Deng labs at UW.
