    Dr. Jiang is currently a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington working on synthesizing and characterizing novel materials for inhibiting the non-specific adsorption of proteins. As an Investigator at NESAC/BIO he was involved in Core research involving the structure of oriented proteins and DNA microarrays.

  • Viola Vogel 1992-2002
    Dr. Viola Vogel is currently a Professor in the Department of Materials heading the Laboratory for Biologically Oriented Materials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich. After completing her graduate research at the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, she received her Ph. D. in Physics at Frankfurt University, followed by two years as postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Berkeley. She joined the Department of Bioengineering faculty at the University of Washington in 1990 with an adjunct appointment in the Physics. She served as an Investigator at NESAC/BIO She was the Founding Director of the Center for Nanotechnology at the University of Washington ('97-'03) prior to her move to Switzerland in 2004. As a NESAC/BIO investigator from 1992-2002, she consulted and collaborated on research involving the structure of proteins at lipid interfaces and those involving optical spectroscopy, lipid assembly,and Langmuir-Blodgett methods.

  • Allan Hoffman 1983-2009
    Dr. Hoffman is a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington. After many years as an NESAC/Bio Investigator he is now a NESAC/Bio Consultant on contact angle measurements, surface modification and smart polymeric materials. He also continues as an instructor in the annual NESAC/Bio Surface Characterization Workshop.

    Dr. Horbett is a Professor in the Departments of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington. After many years as an NESAC/Bio Investigator he is now a NESAC/Bio Consultant on protein and cell interactions with surfaces.

    Julia was a postdoc at NESAC/BIO optimizing the sample preparation and storage of mammalian cells for ToF-SIMS analysis. Currently she is working with MALDI-imaging at the University of Bayreuth, Germany.

    Adam Tayler was a NB Postdoc from 2014-2015 and studied multilayer polymer depth profiling and extracellular matrices using ToF-SIMS. Dr. Taylor, is now doing research using MALDI at NPL.

    Tobias was a Postdoc and Research Assistant Professor at NESAC/BIO in charge of the center’s sum frequency generation (SFG) spectrometer that is used for in situ studies of proteins on surfaces, nanomaterials and thin films. Currently he is a Group Leader in Molecular Spectroscopy at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany.

  • Michael Hughes 2012
    Michael Hughes studied the protein adsorption properties of titanium oxide surfaces grafted with sodium styrene sulfonate films and the competitive adsorption of albumin and fibrinogen onto these surfaces using ESCA, ToF-SIMS and radiolabeling.

    Erik Newman participated in the Clinical Research Experience for Engineers (CREE) program in 2007. He was in Professor Castner’s research group from 2007-2008 researching the characterization and operation of an RF glow discharge (RFGD) reactor, as well as the characterization and optimization of antibody immobilization onto surfaces modified by RFGD deposition. He got his B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 2008.

    Josh was a NESAC/BIO Lab Assistant who assisted Newton Samuel's graduate research. Their primary research topic was DNA immobilization. He majored in Biochemistry and eventually in Applied Mathematics.

    Eiko was an REU student for the summer of 2003. Her project involved creating a flat surface of silane on mica, which provides a suitable environment for imaging proteins. She graduated from University of Washington with a Chemistry degree, and is planning on pursuing graduate study in engineering.

    Marie was a UWEB/REU in the Castner Lab (under postdoc Sally L. McArthur) from 2000-2002. Her research focused on elucidating effects of underlying matrices in detecting proteins by Tof-SIMS. She received her BS in Biochemistry in 2003. Currently, she is a graduate student in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Iowa State University.

Federica came to NESAC/BIO for ToF-SIMS training, working on a joint project with Buddy Ratner.
