BMI Is Associated with Coronavirus Disease 2019 Intensive Care Unit Admission in African Americans

  • A cross-sectional study of African American patients with COVID-19 treated in a single tertiary care center (n=158) between March 12 and April 9 found older age (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.03, 1.11), higher BMI (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.05, 1.18) and lung disease (OR 3.1, 95% CI 1.4, 8.4) were significant risk factors for ICU admission. In contrast with other patient populations with COVID-19the majority of cases (61%) were women.
