COVID-19 Literature Situation Report is a daily (M-F) newsletter that provides a succinct summary of the latest scientific literature related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The scientific literature on COVID-19 is rapidly evolving and these articles were selected for review based on their relevance to Washington State decision making around COVID-19 response efforts. Included in these Lit Reps are some manuscripts that have been made available online as pre-prints but have not yet undergone peer review. Please be aware of this when reviewing articles included in the Lit Reps.

The mean daily COVID-19 incidence rate decreased 4 days after implementation of statewide physical distancing measures in the US, with a decrease of 1% per day, according to a time series analysis. COVID-19-attributed mortality rates decreased 7 days after measures were implemented by 2% per day.

Viral shedding was similar between asymptomatic and symptomatic patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection in a South Korean cohort, with similar rates of conversion to a negative RT-PCR result over time. Most patients (75% asymptomatic vs. 70% symptomatic) had a negative RT-PCR test by 21 days after diagnosis.

An analysis using SARS-CoV-2 viral cultures found that all culture-positive specimens (16/68) were obtained within the first 8 days after symptom onset, despite RNA detection up to several weeks after symptom onset, suggesting that patients may be less infectious after a period of approximately 8 days.

During the first month of the COVID-19 pandemic in 5 states in the US, there was a decrease (range 42%-64%) in emergency department (ED) visits, but an increase in hospital admission rates from the ED (range 22%-149%), indicating a lower overall volume but higher overall acuity of illness in ED visits occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic.

An outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 at an overnight camp in Georgia resulted in 260 confirmed infections among 597 attendees, with an overall attack rate of 44% and high attack rates in all age groups of children and young adults.
