COVID-19 Literature Situation Report

COVID-19 Literature Situation Report is a daily (M-F) newsletter that provides a succinct summary of the latest scientific literature related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The scientific literature on COVID-19 is rapidly evolving and these articles were selected for review based on their relevance to Washington State decision making around COVID-19 response efforts. Included in these Lit Reps are some manuscripts that have been made available online as pre-prints but have not yet undergone peer review. Please be aware of this when reviewing articles included in the Lit Reps.

COVID-19 Literature Situation Report March 17, 2021

Two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19) vaccine did not show protection against mild-to-moderate COVID-19 due to infection with the B.1.351 variant in a randomized trial in South Africa. The trial population did not experience enough severe disease for an analysis of vaccine efficacy against severe disease.

Only 17% (76 of 436) of solid organ transplant recipients developed detectable antibody responses at a median of 20 days after the first dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, according to a convenience sample of US patients. Transplant recipients who were receiving immunosuppression therapy, older transplant recipients, and those vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (as compared to the Moderna vaccine) were less likely to develop detectable antibody responses.

A longitudinal cohort study of healthcare workers in England showed that both natural infection and vaccination with either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine provided more than 85% protection against symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, including with the B.1.1.7 variant.

Based on a press release from the manufacturer, the Novavax vaccine had an efficacy of 96.4% against mild, moderate and severe disease caused by the original COVID-19 strain in a Phase 3 trial in UK, and was 100% protective against hospitalization and death.

Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2

The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 variant was associated with an overall 1.6-fold increase in risk of death compared with infection with previous strains. These findings are based on almost 55,000 UK patients considered to be relatively low-risk who were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 in the UK between October 2020 to January 2021.

COVID-19 Literature Situation Report Mar 10, 2021

Among children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, ICU admission was more likely among older children (6–12 years, aOR = 1.9; 13–20 years, aOR = 2.6) compared with those aged 0–5, non-Hispanic Black than non-Hispanic white patients (aOR = 1.6), and among patients experiencing shortness of breath (aOR = 1.9) and abdominal pain (aOR = 1.7).

New recommendations from the CDC indicate that fully vaccinated individuals can gather with other vaccinated individuals indoors safely without wearing masks. This guidance comes in light of increasing evidence that vaccines can reduce likelihood of asymptomatic infection and transmission of SARS-CoV-2. The CDC recommends that everyone continue to practice COVID-19 precautions such as wearing masks in public and avoiding medium to large-sized gatherings.

COVID-19 Literature Situation Report Mar 8, 2021

Two SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks occurred among US university athletic programs during the fall 2020 despite mandatory directly observed daily antigen testing, suggesting that antigen testing along may not be sufficient to prevent outbreaks in congregate settings.

COVID-19 Literature Situation Report Mar 5, 2021

Mask mandates in the US were associated with decreases in the growth rate of daily COVID-19 cases and deaths after implementation during March-December 2020. During the same period, reopening of any on-premises dining was associated with increases in the growth rates of daily COVID-19 cases and deaths.

COVID-19 Literature Situation Report Mar 4, 2021

The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 variant may be 65-82% more transmissible than earlier strains, according to a model fitted to COVID-19 data from the UK around the time of the variant’s emergence. The authors estimate that COVID-19 related deaths and hospitalizations in England in 2021 could exceed those in 2020 in the absence of a substantial vaccine-rollout (2 million people fully vaccinated per week), even with stringent non-pharmaceutical interventions.
