Telework Before Illness Onset Among Symptomatic Adults Aged ≥18 Years With and Without COVID-19 in 11 Outpatient Health Care Facilities — United States, July 2020

Symptomatic US adults with positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests were 1.8 times more likely to report going exclusively to an office or school setting (versus telework) in the 2 weeks prior to symptom onset compared to those with negative test results (n=248). While case-patients were less likely to telework on a full- or part-time basis, the…

Avoiding versus Contracting COVID-19 On the Effectiveness of Social Distancing at the Level of the Individual

[Preprint, not peer-reviewed] A participant’s behavior during behavioral simulation of social distancing behaviors was associated with the risk of subsequently contracting COVID-19, whereas self-report of these behaviors was not. Results from a survey among 2,120 US residents determined that an individual’s performance in a simulator intended to assess physical positioning was associated with lower risk…

How Effective Is the Filtration of ‘KN95’ Filtering Facepiece Respirators During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

An investigation of filtration performance of different filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) found high disparities between FFRs purchased by healthcare establishments.  NIOSH-approved certification offered good efficiency compared to non NIOSH-approved FFRs. Furthermore, inspecting FFRs visually was not helpful in determining if the product was counterfeit or had defects. Brochot et al. (Oct 30, 2020). How Effective…

Association of County-Wide Mask Ordinances with Reductions in Daily CoVID-19 Incident Case Growth in a Midwestern Region Over 12 Weeks

[Pre-print, not peer-reviewed] Missouri counties with mask mandates had a daily percent COVID-19 growth rate that was 32% lower than the growth rate in counties without mask mandates, based on a population-based quasi-experimental longitudinal study conducted from June to September. In the 3 weeks before mandatory mask mandates were instated, the average daily percent increase…

Peripheral Oxygen Saturation in Older Persons Wearing Nonmedical Face Masks in Community Settings

Wearing a 3-layer non-medical face mask was not associated with a decline in oxygen saturation among adults over 65 in a small (n=25) crossover study. Study participants were provided with a mask and pulse oximeter and were instructed to measure their peripheral oxygen saturation (Spo2) three times, twenty minutes apart for one hour before, one…

Evaluating the Effect of Demographic Factors, Socioeconomic Factors, and Risk Aversion on Mobility during the COVID-19 Epidemic in France under Lockdown: A Population-Based Study

Analysis of mobile phone data in France showed that the March lockdown was effective in reducing population mobility, reducing countrywide displacements from 57 to approximately 20 million trips per day (65% reduction). Mobility drops were strongly associated with regions with active populations, workers employed in sectors highly affected by the lockdown, and hospitalizations. However, anomalous…

COVID-19 Mitigation Behaviors by Age Group — United States, April–June 2020

A nationally representative survey (n=6,475) conducted in three waves from April to June 2020 found that self-reported mask wearing increased across survey waves, while handwashing, physical distancing, and cancelling social activities decreased. Avoiding some or all restaurants did not change significantly. While >40% of respondents reported following all recommended behaviors across all waves, engagement was…

Withdrawn notice ( https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.10.21.20208728v2 ) [Pre-print, not peer-reviewed] An analysis of the impact of face mask mandates instituted over the spring and summer in the US indicated that mask mandates across 1,083 counties in the U.S decreased hospitalization rates from COVID-19 even when controlling for other factors that could affect disease severity. Using a staggered…

Adoption of Strategies to Mitigate Transmission of COVID-19 During a Statewide Primary Election — Delaware, September 2020

Survey responses from primary election poll workers in Delaware indicated that SARS-CoV-2 mitigation measures at polling places generally aligned with CDC guidelines and were widely adopted and feasible, but there were some gaps in infection prevention control efforts. Most poll workers surveyed had good knowledge about SARS-CoV-2 transmission and 80% had received COVID-19 mitigation training….

Pasteurization Inactivates SARS-CoV-2 Spiked Breast Milk

Pasteurization was shown to successfully inactivate SARS-CoV-2 in human breast milk. Conzelmann et al. spiked five different virus isolates from Germany, France, and the Netherlands into five individual milk samples. Incubating the milk samples at room temperature for 30 minutes resulted in a 40.9-92.8% drop in viral titers, and after pasteurization no further residual infectivity…
