Janet Liang is in dire need of our help, and we are hosting a bone marrow drive at The Rotunda on February 14-16, 10 am- 3pm. Please come out to register as a marrow donor!
In 2009, Janet Liang was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia while majoring in international development studies at UCLA. During her treatment at the UCLA Medical Center, she began her “Team Janet” campaign. After undergoing several aggressive rounds of chemotherapy, Janet achieved full remission in 2010. Unfortunately, in December 2011, doctors told her that she had relapsed.
The cancer has returned. She now has until April to find a perfect marrow match – her best option for a full recovery.
What makes it difficult for Janet to find a match is that she is of Chinese ancestry.
Of the 8 million individuals registered, less than 1% are Chinese. Just to give you a breakdown,
less than 30% are minorities,
less than 10% are Hispanic/Latino, 7.6% are Black/African American, 7% are Asian, and 1% are Native American.
Ethnicity plays a key factor when it comes to matching patients and donors
As only 4 in 10 patients in general find a match, we encourage people from ALL ethnic backgrounds to come out and register. Registering as a bone marrow donor is amazingly simple. It takes only a short time to fill out a consent form and to use cotton swabs (q tips) to rub the inside of the cheeks. It is painless and non-invasive.
As of now, Janet is currently receiving treatment until a marrow match can be found. Janet’s dream is to be teacher and to obtain a master’s degree in public health or social work.
