MEDIC 3/11

Hello Everyone, On Monday, March 11th in Health Sciences T wing room 359 from 5 to 6:30, MEDIC will hold its next last meeting of winter quarter. Michelle and Zach will be facilitating a discussion on the ramifications of increasingly accurate neuroimaging techniques and the prospects of brain mapping. Should we use brain imaging techniques to predict future psychopathology? If an individual wishes to change their neural circuitry to experience life differently, should we allow this “cosmetic brain surgery?” How could we prevent someone with perfect knowledge of brain function from “hacking” someone’s mind in order to exploit them? If you want to read more about these issues before our discussion, the following links provide more information: http://noahpinionblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/desire-modification-ultimate-technology.html http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/18/science/project-seeks-to-build-map-of-human-brain.html http://download.cell.com/neuron/pdf/PIIS0896627312005181.pdf?intermediate=true We are tentatively planning on meeting at the same time next quarter. If you wish to attend meetings but are unable to meet Monday 5—6:30 send us an email. We will do our best to accommodate everyone’s schedules. Navigating the Health Sciences building can be tricky. Enter through the main T wing entrance, enter on the third floor, turn right, turn left at the first hallway on your left, and when that hallway tees, room 359 is just to your right. Bring your friends! We will bring brownies! If you have any questions, feel free to email us at medicuw@uw.edu and be sure to like us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/medicuw for updates about MEDIC and bioethics in the media. Hope to see you Monday, Zach Simon, Ceri Weber, Michelle Drews, Vishu Anekonda and Claire Simon — MEDIC at UW University of Washington Student Organization Affiliated with Bioethics and Humanities http://students.washington.edu/medicuw/ medicuw@u.washington.edu
