Cancer Treatment Side Effects & Supportive and Palliative Care

Sleep Disturbance

Sleep disturbances are very common in people with cancer. Anxiety related to cancer diagnosis and treatment is one of the most common causes for sleep disturbances in people with cancer. Pain can also interfere with sleep patterns, and lack of good sleep can also increase the level of pain a person feels.

Melatonin for sleep disturbance

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body that is involved in triggering sleep cycles. When melatonin production is deficient, sleep is affected. Melatonin helps regulate sleep, either falling asleep or maintaining a deep sleep through the night. Melatonin has not been studied for sleep in people with cancer but it may be a useful alternative for those who can't tolerate or do not wish to take sleep inducing medication.
