This project, led by myself and Ed Kessler, examines how recession and austerity measures in Europe have affected trust in local economic, social, and religious encounters in four cities: London, Paris, Berlin, and Rome. The research explores how members of different faith communities (Muslim, Jewish, Christian – different denominations as well as non-practicing) determine trustworthiness in others and when they make themselves vulnerable in a period already characterized by increasing levels of insecurity. The research then looks at the importance of trust in economic activity and growth, the capacity to deliver needed social support at a local level, and reducing tensions while promoting notions of community and public good. The research is in the pilot phase now, which focuses on several areas of North London, and will continue in years 2-3 with the other three European cities.
