Our research describes a double process that is a consequence of the Argentinian post-neoliberal context. On the one hand, we focus on the gentrification of an area that shows a growing appreciation of real estate and the emergence of “alternative” lifestyles that shows new uses of the public space. On the second, we focus on the poverty “illegal” settlement of low income population, mostly regional migrants, located in the same area. We are interested in the perception of the “other” and the everyday interactions between middle class neighbors and the group of newcomers identified as “the poor” in a landscape of social, cultural and ethnic inequality. We are also keen on how neoliberal values and practices travel outside the euro-American experience and how they are recreated and lived in the construction of class boundaries.
