6.) What are the most common open repairs of inguinal hernias?
|
Open repairs:
- Marcy repair: ligation of indirect sac and tightening of the internal inguinal ring.
- Bassini repair: ligation of indirect sac and suture of conjoined tendon and internal oblique muscle to the shelving edge of the inguinal ligament.
- Shouldice repair: similar to Bassini repair but accomplished with 3-4 layers of running sutures.
- McVay repair (Cooper's ligament repair): suture of the transversus abdominis muscle and transversalis fascia to Cooper's iliopectineal ligament. This repairs Hesselbach's triangle and the femoral canal.
- Lichtenstein repair: tension free repair suturing mesh to the shelving edge of inguinal ligament and to the conjoined tendon and internal oblique muscle. This is now most commonly used with lower recurrence rate.
