6.) What is the etiology of acute appendicitis and the progression of the pathology?
|
The initial etiology of acute appendicitis is luminal obstruction. This is followed by secretion of mucus and fluid and a rise in intraluminal pressure. The increased pressure compromises the outflow of blood and lymph. Mucosal ischemia, inflammation, and ulceration are the result. Bacterial overgrowth occurs with bacteria invading. Necrosis of the muscularis then occurs and ultimately perforation ensues.
