SMALL INTESTINE AND APPENDIX
Case #1 -
A 21 year old with acute RLQ pain

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
9.) What is the significance of a mass in the RLQ on exam? What should you do?

A mass in the right lower quadrant on examination may represent phlegmon (inflammatory mass) or abscess. A CT scan is indicated to differentiate these two. An abscess should be drained percutaneously under CT guidance if possible. A phlegmon or an abscess is also treated with IV antibiotics and interval appendectomy after six weeks.
