Goals and Objectives

  • Recognize and discuss the metabolic and critical care issues encountered by severely ill patients, and develop management plans for these conditions.
  • Craft a comprehensive admission note and daily progress note for a critically ill patient, detailing a problem-based assessment and plan for multisystem illness.
  • Describe management of the ventilated patient, including ventilator modes, weaning strategies, and indications for tracheostomy placement.
  • Discuss the evaluation and management of hypovolemic, septic, and cardiogenic shock.
  • Recognize the indications for surgical intervention in the critically ill or trauma patient.
  • Perform technical procedures such as arterial line placement, central line insertion, bronchoalveolar lavage, bedside ultrasound and cardiac output assessment, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: Credentialing at the VA is an extensive process and can take several weeks to complete.It is important to being this process no less than eight weeks prior to the start of your rotation.

Site Onboarding Tasks: No less than eight weeks prior (or sooner if requested by the site), please provide the following information to the site coordinator:

Students will also need an HR appointment at the VA. Please bring the following to your appointment:

Fingerprinting: All personnel at VAMC is required to have fingerprinting completed within 120 of the start of your rotations. These incoming fingerprints, “Courtesy Fingerprints” may be done at any VA facility throughout the United States. Students that have an unexpired VA badge do not need to repeat fingerprinting. Do not wait until the last minute to complete this step as processing time can vary.

 

Visiting Students: Please advise the UW Dept. of Surgery Education Team (surgstus@uw.edu) who your completed grade evaluation should be returned to following the completion of your rotation and include a copy of any specific evaluation forms that your home institution may require.

Check-in Instructions: Students will receive an email verifying their enrollment in SURG 691 approximately six weeks prior to the start of the rotation.

UW Students: There is no additional credentialing needed for this rotation.

Visiting Students: No less than six weeks prior to the start of the rotation, please ensure that you have provided all the information that was requested in your VSLO offer letter. Additionally, please advise the site coordinator who your completed grade evaluation should be returned to following the completion of your rotation.
