National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA), a 43-year-old national non-profit that preserves and promotes the dignity, well-being, and quality of life of elders in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community is seeking instructors fluent in Vietnamese for its Digital Skills Training Program. The program aims to improve employment prospects for Vietnamese elders who lack English and digital skills. Many of them are also income limited, and they find themselves more marginalized in today’s increasingly digital society, because they are required to use computers and the internet more often to find a job. In order to help them overcome the barriers to employment, the program will provide training in computer basics in Vietnamese.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Communicate with seniors in Vietnamese;
  • Assist with class preparation, classroom training, and tutoring;
  • Assist in reviewing, grading, and recording homework and quizzes.

Requirements:

  • Fluent in Vietnamese;
  • Patient, and willing to help seniors in the Vietnamese community;
  • Proficient in computer basics (e.g., Microsoft suite);
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Work in person in downtown Seattle.

Ideal number of students: 2

Times:

  • Monday, Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM

Impact:

As an instructor for the program, you will get to know and help your neighbors in your local community, all while continuing to build your professional skills.

Asians are the largest minority group in Seattle. Learning about the life and culture of Asians through the seniors is likely to be new and interesting for you. They are among the most socially invisible groups of people, but when you think of the seniors in your own family, you may wonder what changes and difficulties they are going through as older adults and immigrants in this country. Through this program, you will develop real connections with Vietnamese seniors. In addition, you will be given the chance to put what you have learned from school into practice. You will play the role of a teacher, giving guidance and assistance to seniors, which requires your computer skills, communication, patience, and empathy. You will work in a bilingual environment where you can also improve your language proficiency.

If you have passion for helping seniors and are willing to see first-hand how you can have a positive impact on your local community, we are looking forward to having you join our team and contribute to the greater good together.
