Outdoor Recreation

SVL hosts a variety of outdoor recreation activities throughout the year, largely season dependent. Some of these events include snow nights, blacksmithing, camping, and run groups. As we determine dates and times, they will be added to the Events portion of the website, and you will be able to sign up to attend. In the sections below, you will be able to see some information regarding how these events occur and their typical quarter.

Snow Nights

Snowboarding

Typically during winter quarter we will host one to three “Snow Nights” from SVL. This will generally be a smaller event (Approximately 6-8 individuals), and based on funding available, coverage of gear rental from the UW Gear Garage, and lift tickets, as well as transportation, are covered for students.

If you have your own gear and lift tickets, and just need transportation – We can definitely facilitate that during our Snow Nights!

Typically, the Snow Nights will occur at Steven’s Pass on a weekend date, or during a weekday (if highly requested by students). For Winter Quarter 2026, we are waiting to review travel options to Steven’s Pass and the current snowstorm in January to prep the mountain. More details will come out in the coming weeks!

Lawless Forge

Lawless Forge

We partner with Lawless Forge to engage in mindfulness based activities such as methodical movement, breathe control, and body scans. Outside of these crucial self-supporting skills, this is an amazing event where you get to leave with what YOU made with your own two hands.

We have forged Horseshoe Knives, Rebar Knives, Chopsticks, BBQ Forks, and Bottle Openers! Although we may have some repeats of this, for students that have gone to multiple events, we may open the opportunity for Damascus Steel Ring events as well as Black Smithing Advanced courses (which require attending several of the other public courses first).

This event is typically offered during the Spring and Fall quarters, in conjunction with Veterans Appreciation Week and Memorial Day events.

Camping Trips

Camping Trips

Ever wanted to get out of the city, hang out with some veterans, and go back to the days of basic training? Well, we got that, but with better food and company, and a little less weight that you have to carry around.

These events typically occur in late Spring quarter, Summer quarter, and sometimes in early Fall quarter. We will utilize reservation systems for state parks to minimize costs to SVL and students, and assist in carpooling or transport to the location. Money is typically pooled for food from students, or there is pre-purchasing completed by the SVL staff.

Students are encourage to bring their own gear (tents, backpacks, blankets, cold weather gear, sleeping bags, etc), but there are many of these items available for rental via UW Gear Garage.

Winded Warriors

Want to run? Maybe you want to walk! Either way, we have a fun group for you – Winded Warriors! Winded Warriors is led by one of our veteran peer mentors and will meet during specified times each quarter.

For Winter Quarter 2026, Winded Warriors will meet on Wednesdays (Beginning 1-07-2026) at 3PM in front of the I.M.A. on the UW Campus.

Typical guiding pace will be 9:30-10:30/mile, but all paces are welcome, and other veteran peer mentors may assist in varying paces (faster or slower). No sign up needed, just show up!
