We are a ceramic art and pottery studio in Northwest Seattle. We sell the best ceramics and other handmade goods with an emphasis on local and regional artists producing contemporary, functional wares. We also offer classes, workshops, private lessons, and studio rental.

Studio Technician

Hours: Variable, averaging 15-20 hours/week
Pay: $20/hour plus studio space

The Studio Tech is responsible for oversight and management of the ceramic studio and classroom infrastructure and systems. To this end, the Studio Tech oversees the assistantship program and directs the assistants’ day to day work. The Studio Tech is an integral part of our SSC team, playing an important role in setting and maintaining the culture and values of our community. The Studio Tech is responsible for the following :

  • Managing the studio assistant program including maintaining program description and policies; recruiting new assistants; training; planning, prioritizing, coordinating, and supervising the work of the SSC assistants; providing mentorship and support for goal setting, skill progression, and learning for participants in the assistant program.
  • Managing the SSC studio and classroom facilities, infrastructure and systems including but not limited to supplies and materials orders, mixing glazes, reclaiming waste clay, cleaning tools and equipment, and keeping the studio organized.
  • Prepare and transition the studio and provide support for classes, workshops, and events.
  • Maintain kiln firing schedule, load and unload kiln, and communicate with studio community regarding firings.
  • Maintain work-flow systems to track and organize student work.
  • Cleaning or ensuring that the studio is cleaned prior to the start of each day.
  • Maintaining studio equipment and systems such as the pottery wheels, kiln, waste-water system and working with the owner to bring in expert assistance as needed.
  • Lead studio safety committee and maintain studio safety standards and procedures.
  • Answering questions about studio use, tools, materials, and equipment for students and members. Reminding students and members of cleaning and safety protocol as well as studio standards.
  • Other tasks as requested

Gallery and Studio Representative

Hours: Variable, average 14 hours/week, primarily Wednesday 10:00am-5:00pm and Sunday 10:00am-5:00pm
Pay: $17.50/hour

The Gallery and Studio Representatives are the primary and (sometimes only) staff person responsible for opening the gallery and studio, and they are the first face any customer, student, or member sees when they come to Saltstone Ceramics. They are an integral part of our SSC team, playing an important role in setting and maintaining the culture and values of our community. The Gallery and Studio Representative is responsible for the following :

  • Offering exemplary customer service to gallery visitors (providing information about the work on display, answering questions, taking payment, wrapping/packing sales)
  • Opening the gallery and studio to students and the public at 11am and closing the gallery at 5pm.
  • Greeting students, members, and customers; assisting with introductions for newer students and members.
  • Assisting students picking up finished work.
  • Update scheduling system with new students and cancellations/rescheduling.
  • Answer phone and voicemails.
  • Answering questions about studio use, tools, materials, and equipment for students and members. Reminding students and members of cleaning and safety protocol as well as studio standards.
  • Fulfilling online orders for in-store pickup and shipping.
  • Responding to inquiries via the info@saltstoneceramics.com email address.
  • Cleaning the studio and gallery prior to opening, dusting work in the gallery, watering plants and washing gallery windows. Other light cleaning as necessary.
  • Receiving and unpacking deliveries.
  • Data entry for new products.
  • Managing basic inventory of studio and gallery.
  • Taking payment for clay and tools as necessary.
  • Helping with gallery display as needed
