The Jewish Museum seeks Summer Interns
Reports to: Manager, Adult Programs
FLSA Status: Paid Internship ($16/hour)
Schedule: 21 hours per week
This eight-week internship, modeled as a summer institute, is an introduction to every aspect of work at the Jewish Museum happening both onsite and virtually. Learn how museums and other cultural organizations are adapting to the current reality of institutional reckoning and social change, and explore the future of museum work with a group of your peers. Meet with Jewish Museum staff to hear about their vision for the Museum, and discuss the work of producing and promoting exhibitions and programs with curators, designers, educators, and fundraisers. Special guests from beyond the Museum include artists, curators, exhibition designers, and other innovators in the art world.
Responsibilities:
- Attend group Zoom sessions each week
- Completion of department or project work
- Participate in group Slack channel
- Individual check-ins on Zoom
On the internship application form under “type of internship sought,” please indicate which departments or independent projects you are interested in, selecting at least three total:
Departments:
- Curatorial: Research specific topics in art; organize visual material; create and maintain checklists and exhibition documents/presentations; assist with generation and editing of exhibition texts.
- Design: Help design print and digital assets, prepare design files for production, and assist in defining brand guidelines as part of the Creative Services Department.
- Digital Content and Communications: Work with a dynamic and cross-functional team on the creation of the Museum’s social media content, as well as digital and traditional marketing and press relations.
- Education: Assist Education Department staff with planning and implementation of School, Family, Access, and Educator Programs, and learn about various virtual and in-person programming formats.
- Public Programs: Assist with planning and implementation of public and academic programs for adult audiences. Help with planning and ongoing research for future events, and support production of interpretation materials, including new digital initiatives.
Independent Projects:
- Creative: Make a work of art to present (in any media or genre) that responds to Virtual Summer Institute discussions.
- Research: Produce a written work and presentation about a topic of your choice.
Requirements:
While participating in the Institute, some interns will work in specific departments such as Education, Design, and Curatorial, while others will pursue independent projects. Interns spend 6 hours per week in virtual group presentations and discussion sessions, and 15 hours per week working on either department or independent projects. Department and independent project work may be either remote or hybrid (remote and onsite), but onsite work is not required.
- Current or recently graduated university student (BA or MA level)
- Interest in museum work, art, and Jewish culture
- Ability to participate in a seminar-type discussion
- Must have internet access and computer with camera
- Due to the Jewish Museum’s payroll parameters, applicants must have a Social Security Number
