Journal articles are
often the most commonly requested items. The field of Engineering
produces voluminous literature through this medium. Like other fields,
articles in Engineering are primarily accessed first through an index or
database and then searching to see whether the library holds the specific
journal containing the specific article. With the exception of aggregate
databases, most indexing databases contain articles related to a specific
subfield of engineering, such as mechanical engineering, chemical
engineering, or electrical engineering for example. The best thing to
determine is the subarea in which the patron is interested in. From this
point, searching in an index that focuses on this subfield will yield
better results since doing so will have narrowed the set of items to be
searched. This method is useful for both known and unknown items.

As it is with other literature in Engineering, the name of the
association,
organization, or society who produced or published the article is the most
useful information, short of an accurate and complete citation, to finding
the specific article.
For example, IEEE's site will
contain all that it publishes and sponsors, including journal articles
as well as conference proceedings.
Finally, unlike journals located in other UW branch libraries, journals located in the engineering library are shelved alphabetically by title of journal, which can be confusing since journal titles change periodically in the field of Engineering. For more information on how to locate a specific journal that might have changed titles, visit the library's link about journals.
