  • FAS Times
The origin of FAS Times, the quarterly newsletter of the FAS Family Resource Institute, dates back to February 1991. It began with a collaborative endeavor between parents raising children with FASD and staff at the Washington State Adoption Support Program. The first mailing was written by Jocie DeVries, describing her family's experience with their son, Russell, a 16-year-old boy who had recently been diagnosed by Dr. Sterling Clarren in the Craniofacial Clinic at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle. The adoption support staff mailed the behavioral description of FASD to all of the families on their mailing list. The response from parents was overwhelming with comments like, "I read the description of your son, Russell, and my neighbor thought I had written it to describe my son" and "How did you do that!" Today, FAS Times presents information on the many issues related to the disability of FASD based on the Collective Family Experience. This information has been gathered since 1990 from surveys, website contacts, phone interviews and working retreats from thousands of parents with diagnosed children around the world. FAS Times is provided free to Washington State residents by the Washington State Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse. For out of state residents, a $20 donation is requested.
