NESAC/BIO Research Coordinator Dan Graham has been named AVS Fellow for his development of ToF-SIMS methods to investigate important problems in biology and medicine, especially the application of multivariate analysis methods for the interpretation of complex ToF-SIMS datasets.
NESAC/BIO Research Coordinator Dan Graham has been selected as the 2021 winner of the Peter M.A. Sherwood Mid-Career Award from the AVS Applied Surface Science Division for innovation and leadership in the application of ToF-SIMS to organic and biological materials and for the development of practical multivariate analysis tools which are widely used in the Applied Surface Science community.

NESAC/BIO graduate student Yung-Chen Wang has been selected to receive 6 months funding from the NSF and JSPS to work in the laboratory of Professor Takeshi Kawai at the Tokyo University of Science. Yung-Chen will be researching new methods for nanoparticle synthesis and processing during his stay in Japan.

NESAC/BIO ran a workshop entitled “New Directions in Biomedical Surface Analysis” at the World Biomaterials Congress in Montreal. Buddy Ratner, Lara Gamble and Dave Castner gave presentations at this workshop.
Professor Emeritus Allan Hoffman, a NESAC/BIO Investigator from 1983-2009, has received a special Controlled Release Society (CRS) award from the CSR Foundation. The Allan Hoffman CRS Foundation Award will provide travel funds for students to attend the annual CRS meetings. Allan will receive the 2017 Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal Award for his excellent in biomaterials research and development.
NESAC/BIO graduate student Yung-Chen Wang won a Microscopy & Microanalysis Student Award for his research on charaterization of Protein G functionalized gold nanoparticles.
NESAC/BIO Investigator Buddy Ratner has received a Most Cited Article award from the Annals of Bioengineering for his article entitled “Porous Implants Modulate Healing and Induce Shifts in Local Macrophage Polarization in the Foreign Body Reaction.”
NESAC/BIO graduate student Patrik Johansson was awarded a Tomas A. Hirschfeld award from the SciX 2015 Conference for his research on “Detailed Analysis of Protein Fibers by Vibrational Sum-Frequency Scattering and Second-Harmonic Generation Imaging”.
NESAC/BIO Associate Director Lara Gamble has been named AVS Fellow for her continued development of novel biomedical surface analysis tools and methodology for advancing our understanding of diagnostic devices and biological materials.
