Abstract: The goal of this research project is to evaluate factors influencing spotted owl demography in Olympic National Park. Although spotted owls and their habitat have been protected in the Park since 1938, and although the spotted owl was listed as threatened in 1990, the population on the Olympic Peninsula is still declining. Although the park has a long term data set on spotted owl demography, collected under the auspices of effectiveness monitoring for the Northwest Forest Plan, no analysis has been conducted to date on the factors which influence spotted owl demographic performance in the park setting. This project will evaluate the influence of 3 factors that are hypothesized to influence spotted owl demographic performance: barred owls, stand characteristics, and disturbance history.
