The California Science Coordinator is a key member of the Region’s Science Applications Program and will supervise a growing number of staff who: identify and focus capacity on shared conservation-science priorities; lead, coordinate, and support integration of cross-programmatic and cross-organization landscape conservation efforts; and develop and support implementation of spatial and decision-support tools to inform conservation actions. The Coordinator interacts regularly with each of the other Service natural resources programs in our Region; with Science Applications staff and managers in our Service Headquarters; with leadership, managers, and staff from other Federal and State agencies; and with a number of other key partners (e.g. Industry and Non-Governmental Organizations).

The position is based in our Regional Office in Sacramento, California. Our Region has federal fish and wildlife management responsibilities for California, Nevada, and the Klamath Basin of southern Oregon. The Region includes the most ecologically diverse areas in the United States, ranging from the arid sand dunes in the Mojave Desert to the snow-capped crags in the high Sierras; from rich farmland in the Central Valley to rain-soaked redwood forests along the Pacific coast. This highly diverse geography provides habitats for a vast array of fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats.

Sacramento is in the heart of Northern California and fork-to-table cuisine.  Its temperate Mediterranean climate is ideally suited for outdoor activities year-round.  The 32-mile-long American River Parkway, one of the nation’s premier greenbelts, provides excellent kayaking, biking, and birding, as well as fishing for salmon, steelhead, shad, and striped bass, all within minutes of the office.  San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Napa Valley, and the Pacific Coast are all close by.  Within a two-hour drive, you can be at the ocean or your favorite ski resort, camping spot, or entertainment location.  Summer months are sunny, dry and warm, with daytime highs in the 90s and cool evenings in the 60s.  Winter months have average daytime highs in the 50-60s and nighttime lows in the 40s.
