UW Emergency Medicine: Work-Study Research Assistant

The Division of Emergency Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for two Work-Study Research Assistants (RAs) to work 10 hours weekly in either the Harborview Medical Center (HMC) or University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) Emergency Departments for a 9 month duration. The RAs will assist with screening patients, discussing diagnoses with physicians, and collecting blood work from the clinical laboratory for future analysis. The subject population will be adults who present to the HMC or UWMC Emergency Departments with abnormal vital signs and evidence of organ dysfunction.

The HMC/UWMC Emergency Department Work-Study position provides a unique opportunity for individuals interested in the medical sciences to gain experience in the field of Emergency Medicine. Competitive candidates will be reliable, consistent, detail oriented, able to multi-task, take direction from more than one person and be able to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people.  The RAs will report to Daniel Henning, Acting Assistant Professor, Division of Emergency Medicine.

Research Activities

  • Recruit, interview, screen and enroll potential subjects in the clinical setting of the HMC Emergency Department
  • Serve as primary contact with physicians and laboratory personnel
  • Extract technical, medical and/or behavioral information from clinical records of research subjects and enter clinical data from on-going emergency medicine research projects
  • Maintain confidentiality of subject records

Qualifications

  • Current (UW or Seattle University) student with confirmed Work-Study Award
  • Two years of college-level course in a related area, such as medical sciences, pre-medical, public health or psychology in good academic standing; Post-Bachelorette preferred
  • Able to work within an Emergency Department environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to interact with patients, physicians, nurses and staff
  • Prior work experience interacting with the public and professionals on a regular basis
  • Knowledge Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Position Details

  • January 2017 – September 2017 (Flexible end point)
  • ~10 hours a week
  • Hourly Rate: $15.00
