Research Assistant Position

Paid Undergraduate Research Assistant Position in Skin Cancer Research

Department of Medicine, Division of Dermatology and the Department of Pathology

The Paul Nghiem Lab is a moderately sized, diverse lab with basic, translational, and clinical research projects. We study Merkel cell carcinoma; an uncommon, frequently lethal skin cancer associated with immune suppression, UV exposure, and the Merkel cell polyomavirus (see www.merkelcell.org). Our lab is located in SLU at the UW Medical Center, which is a quick shuttle ride away from main campus.

We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic undergraduate to assist with general lab duties and translational/clinical studies involving maintenance of patient databases and support of clinical trials. Many of our projects involve contact with patients and other healthcare providers. Your duties would involve collecting data from patient charts, ordering tissue samples, stocking the tissue culture room, updating the website, and maintaining an accurate and up-to-date database. Students that are organized, communicative, collaborative and have a strong desire to learn about the biology and clinical management of cancer are encouraged to apply.

We will prioritize applicants who are sophomores (or exceptional freshmen) who are majoring or intending to major in a biological science and have successfully completed some relevant coursework. We will prioritize students who plan to go into healthcare or clinical research. Prior research or clinical experience is advantageous but not required. A minimum of ten hours a week is the anticipated commitment. However, participation can be flexible and you are able to set your own hours. Students must make a two-year part-time commitment during the school year and full time during the initial summer.

The Undergraduate Research Assistant position offers hourly compensation equal to the Washington State minimum.

Qualified applicants should send a cover letter, resume, and unofficial transcript to Zoe Thuesmunn at thuesz@uw.edu.

Pasteur Foundation Internship Opportunity

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to share that our 2018 Summer Internship application link is active and available for sharing and distribution: https://pasteurfoundation.org/scientific-careers/summer-internship

For over 15 years, the Pasteur Foundation Summer Internship Program has provided U.S. college undergraduates, entering their Senior year, with a rare opportunity to work on supervised research projects at the Institut Pasteur. The Foundation’s goal is to encourage and inspire students in the pursuit of a scientific career within the context of an international laboratory experience.

Each year, selected laboratories at the Institut Pasteur host U.S. undergraduate students.  Internships must begin on or after Monday, June 4, 2018 and conclude on Friday, July 27, 2018, for a total of ten weeks. 2018 applications must be submitted on or before Friday, January 26, 2018.

During the internships, interns will carry out research supervised by a lab mentor. Applicants should be eager to engage with a different culture, and self-sufficient enough to arrange travel and secure housing in Paris. Depending on availability, affordable housing in a residence on campus may be possible. Interns will receive $6,500 to defray travel, housing and living expenses.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be undergraduates with an excellent academic record and a strong interest in biosciences and biomedical research (prior lab experience is highly recommended);
  • Have completed three full years (six semesters) of college course work by the time the internship commences (be a rising senior);
  • Not have received an undergraduate degree at the time of the internship.
  • Knowledge of French is not necessary, but a desire to learn it is advisable. This program is open to U.S. citizens only.
  • The names of awardees will be posted on this webpage.

I thank you for sharing, posting, and/or forwarding this information to your students and look forward to another excellent year of inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Sincerely,

Gregory A. Corsico

2018 MCAT – changes and updates

We are excited to share with you several updates to the MCAT test preparation portfolio offered by the AAMC.

We are pleased to inform you that the Official Guide to the MCAT® Exam, Fifth Edition is now available. This new edition of the Official Guide includes an updated Part 1 providing students with everything they need to know about the MCAT exam. It includes an overview of exam structure, registration and scheduling logistics, preparation resources, test day procedures, and scoring. Please note that the questions found in Part 2 remain the same.

Further, all AAMC practice products have been automatically updated to mirror the new interface of the MCAT exam. As mentioned, in 2018 the AAMC is making changes to the way the MCAT exam interface looks, feels, and functions on test day. These changes include new features such as higher screen resolution, clearer font type and size, and keyboard shortcuts that can be used during the exam. If you have already purchased a product, you will automatically have access to the update. In addition, a free tool, Practice with Exam Features, has been made available for students to preview and practice interacting with the new interface so they know what to expect on test day.

Finally, the AAMC has re-developed and enhanced the free tool, How to Create a Study Plan for the MCAT® Exam. This new guide walks students through six steps to help you from understanding the basics of the exam, to identifying available resources and strategies to use, to drafting their plan and executing it. This tool provides worksheets at each step of the process to help them put together the best study plan that fits their individual needs.

UCLA Re-Application Program 2018

The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is offers a comprehensive, structured re-application program designed to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have been unsuccessful in gaining admission to any U.S medical school. RAP is an 11-month program that is conducted in two sessions.  The Summer sessions begins June 18 to July 27th, 2018 and the Academic year session that runs from September 2018 through May 2019 for each cohort.

The Summer program begins with an intensive six-week summer session, focused upon prerequisite science review and on MCAT preparation. Distinguished guest lecturers will also provide seminars and workshops discussing; academic skills; extensive and lively reviews of biology, chemistry, and physics; self-development, time management; financial planning; medical school re-application, and interviewing skills.  Current medical students and former RAP participants provide supporting mentoring and meetings to RAP students.

An individualized academic-year program that consists of a science curriculum will follow. Participants, in close consultation with program advisors, will select their courses through UCLA Extension or a local California State University. Medical school re-application preparation and strategies will be conducted individually. Mock interviews will be conducted and videotaped for participant evaluation and feedback.
