Maya Berhane

Hello! My name is Maya Berhane and I am a second year undergraduate at the University of Washington double majoring in Comprehensive Physics and Astronomy! I have always been interested in space and the construction of the universe which is what motivated me to study physics and astronomy. I am originally from Edmonds, WA and in my free time I enjoy reading, going to the gym, listening to music, being with friends, and watching documentaries!

Cavin Ehlert

Hello! I am Cavin Ehlert I’m a freshman who is hoping to major in astronomy. I’m from Woodinville, Washington which is about 30 minutes east of Seattle. My love for astronomy comes from my parents who would always force me to go stargazing and watch Neil deGrasse Tyson videos with them. Outside of school I enjoy playing video games, hangout with friends, and watch movies. I’m excited for this Pre-MAP and look forward to all that it will teach me.

Ananya Garg

Hi, my name is Ananya, and I am a first-year student. My intended major is astronomy with a minor in linguistics. I was born in India and moved to Washington when I was 9. I have always been interested in space, but I didn’t decide to major in astronomy till 10th grade physics. In this course, I hope to learn more about research opportunities and programming used in astronomy. Outside of school, I like reading, watching movies, playing badminton, and hanging out with my friends.

Hannah Kann

Hello, I am Hannah Kann and I am from Vancouver, WA. I am a freshman here at the University of Washington. I am very interested in the natural sciences and I am looking into a major in biology or astronomy. Outside of school I enjoy playing tennis, napping, and hanging with friends. I am very excited to be a part of Pre-MAP and to learn more about astronomy and research!

Cassidy Johnson

Hello! My name is Cassidy Johnson and I am a sophomore at UW from Denver, Colorado. I am planning to major in both Astronomy and Physics. I grew up going to see Neil Degrasse Tyson speak and looking through my dads telescope. I’ve always known that I love the idea of space and the mystery of what is out there, but didn’t decide to study it until I decided I wanted to be an Astronaut. Other than Astronomy I am working on getting my pilots license and love skiing, listening to music, traveling, and hanging out with friends.

Annabelle Lin

Hello! My name is Annabelle and I’m a sophomore studying Astronomy/Physics. I am from southern California, but I have enjoyed living in Seattle more because of the rain and cold weather. I decided to study physics in my junior year of high school after my physics teacher noticed that I was really enjoying the class and convinced me to pursue it; I later narrowed my focus down to astronomy because space is cool. Outside of classes I like to play video games, like Stardew Valley, hang out with my friends, and listen to music; my favorite band is Måneskin.

Naomi Morato

Hi, my name is Naomi Morato. I am a first-year student at UW with an intended double major in Astronomy, and Applied and Computational Mathematical Sciences. I am from Sammamish, WA, but have also lived in Connecticut and Maryland. I have a strong passion for the intersection of Machine Learning and Astronomy and believe it has amazing potential to impact the field of Astronomy positively. I am excited to get started in research at the UW, especially in the intersection of both of these fields! In my free time, I love to hang out with my friends, play soccer, and play the violin.

Ari Rosenmader

Hello, my name is Ari Rosenmader. I am a third-year student at University of Washington majoring in Astronomy and Physics. Growing up in New Mexico, I loved stargazing and using my telescope under the clear night skies. Some of my fondest memories are watching the Perseids meteor shower with my mom. Outside of school I like to play chess and guitar.

Kim McCartney

Hello, my name is Kim! I was born and raised in Spokane Valley, Washington, and am currently a first year at UW. I have known that I wanted to study space ever since I was 6 years old and watched Through the Wormhole with my dad. And over the years I have only grown more curious about space. I am looking forward to learning how to conduct proper research, and how to do basic coding. I like to read and go to the gym. I also love to bake bread, specifically brioche and cinnamon rolls are my favorite, but I make a lot of focaccias because everyone loves it.

Tessa Ward

Hello! My name is Tessa, and I’m a first-year student (third via Running Start credits) from Ellensburg, Washington. I hope to get my undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy, with plans for a PhD in Astrophysics following. My Dad, a physicist, influenced this passion growing up, with us sharing a love for Feynman’s books. Not unlike Feynman and my father, asking questions and seeking answers has always piqued my interest. The contrast between logic and the lack thereof for unknowns, especially in cosmology, is fascinating! Outside of physical science, I love robotics, hiking, photography, and screenwriting.
