Studying History

History undertakes the study of human affairs in a manner that seeks to understand change and development rather than the state of things at a given moment, taking into account societies in diverse parts of the world from the earliest times for which written records exist to the present.

The Department of History is among the largest departments in the University of Washington, with forty-one faculty members (six holding joint appointments with the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies) and a further fourteen with adjunct status. The Department prides itself on the breadth and caliber of its teaching. We offer degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and we welcome all students to our courses.
