SLS seeks an hourly undergraduate legal assistant to assist in the day-to-day operations of Student Legal Services. The legal assistant will be responsible for scheduling client meetings, record managements, ordering office supplies, client billing, and other duties as assigned. The legal assistant will be working during the summertime and throughout the academic school year.

Responsibilities:

  • Review all consultation intake forms and run conflict checks
  • Schedule client meetings and respond to client email inquiries
  • Reconcile monthly Procard logs
  • Manage client billing by preparing, finalizing, and sending out monthly invoices
  • Manage, organize, and maintain client records in paper or electronic filing systems
  • Manage office technology
  • Manage all other administrative responsibilities in the legal office
  • Assist in onboarding training of new staff
  • Update onboarding training manuals in the legal office
  • Manage outreach efforts
  • Order office supplies
  • Retrieve office mail from the SAO Office

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Freshman or Sophomore UW undergraduate students who intend to remain on campus for at least two more years
  • Interest in law
  • Prior knowledge with office technology (Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs)
  • Excellent communication skills; oral and written
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Prior knowledge of working in an office setting
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Minimum knowledge in confidentiality

  • Candidates with managerial experiences
  • Experience working at a law firm
  • Experience working with students and or adults with disabilities
  • Pattern of excellent attendance and punctuality in other positions
  • Able to speak in multiple languages

The candidate chosen for this position will have the opportunity to gain interpersonal office management skills, experience working with legal documents in a law office, experience working with legal software, and interacting with clients. They will develop relationships with attorneys and legal interns that will be beneficial in their future. Additionally, this position will aid students interested in a career in the law.
