Reading Media: Topics to Explore

Sexual messages are pervasive throughout many different media. Our purpose here is to raise youth awareness of the many ways in which issues of sexuality are being addressed.

Television
Lessons and activities encourage critical viewing of television and evaluation of the sexual messages being conveyed. Also provided are select lessons from Creating Critical Viewers, courtesy of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Themes include: sex on teen dramas, depictions of romantic relationships, LGBT representation.

Film
Lessons and activities encourage critical viewing of film and evaluation of the sexual messages being conveyed. Themes include: the reality of sex scenes, depictions of romantic relationships, defining societal and cultural "norms."

Music Video
Lessons and activities encourage critical viewing of music video and evaluation of the sexual messages being conveyed. Themes include: objectification of women, subverting of gender norms, mingling sex and violence.

Visual Art
Lessons and activities encourage critical viewing of visual art and evaluation of the sexual messages being conveyed. Themes include: the nude as subject, the body as landscape, art of HIV/AIDS.

Lessons and activities encourage critical viewing of the Internet and evaluation of the sexual messages being conveyed. Themes include: online chatting, confession culture and blogs, explicit spam.

Video Games
Lessons and activities encourage critical viewing of video games and evaluation of the sexual messages being conveyed. Themes include: sexualized heroines, selling violence to boys.

Magazines
