Damaging the planet

Money or life?

Political power struggles, environmental issues and economics have created a great controversy around ASARCO’s bid for rebirth in this city. Even in the U.S., where everything seems to have its price, can we place a price on life itself? It is our opinion as young El Pasoans, who plan to remain in this community and raise our children here, that no one has a right to place a price on our lives. Before our time and before we knew what we now understand about the threat of global warming, ASARCO was tolerated; in spite of the fact that is was a destructive and dangerous element in this community. Why would we want to risk having it here now, when we know so much more and know that the risks are even greater? We don’t believe that any amount of money can justify bringing it back.
