The General Program
What is the UB Program for?
To prepare students for college and to provide assistance with the college application process, scholarship search and financial aid application. Classes are offered in writing, reading, science, math, technology, research and test taking. Students earn credits for these classes and grades appear in their transcripts allowing them to complete high school faster. This may allow them to participate in programs such as Running Start or other accelerated programs.
How long do UB students stay in the program?
Students who are accepted are a part of UB until they graduate from high school.
What are the qualifications to apply for UB?
Applicants must be low-income according to federal guidelines (use taxable income) or the first generation in their family to finish college. If a parent completed a degree in another country, the student must check eligibility with staff.
What schools do you serve?
We serve Nathan Hale, Franklin and Cleveland High Schools.

Applications
Who has the applications?
Contact a counselor at your school or download from the web.
What is the application deadline?
March 3rd-all applications should be turned in to the counselors.
What do I say in the essay sections?
Address what you feel is the your most significant accomplishment and tell us something about your strengths and weaknesses and/or ways you have overcome adversity to complete this accomplishment or learned something valuable from it. Use examples; be detailed and specific.

Classes
What classes are taught in UB?
During the school year UB teaches college preparation, college application, resume writing, scholarship search, basic research skills, and expository writing skills for college. During the summer, science, math, language arts, technology, and dance are taught.
Do you stay overnight in the summer?
We do not have a residential program, so students will be given bus tokens and a pass to commute to and from the UW campus. There may be one overnight field trip over the summer.
Can I miss summer UB classes?
Class attendence during the summer is mandatory and new students are on probation until they complete their first summer program. If a student misses more than three days, he/she will dropped. We must comply with Seattle School District Mandates for awarding credit, so we have to be strict on hours of attendance.
Who teaches in the summer?
Instructors are usually university professors or instructors from the UW campus.
Are stipends or lunch money offered?
Yes, but only in summer. Students will receive a modest stipend at the completion of the summer program and will receive lunch money every day and bus tokens or a pass for commuting costs.
