At Thursday's Faculty Senate meeting, President Emmert said that guidelines for the $2 million
senior faculty compression/inversion fund won't be finalized until the Fall and that the Provost
is appointing a committee to work out a plan.
Asked if lecturers and senior lecturers, who are rarely able to negotiate raises, will be
eligible, Emmert answered that all issues of eligibility would be resolved in the planning
discussions ahead.
In his presentation, Doug Wadden, Chair of the Senate Planning and Budget Committee, noted that
units and departments are currently conducting merit reviews and advised them to go ahead with
decisions without making any assumptions about the $2million dollar fund. In this current merit
round, faculty will receive a 2% increase based on "continuing merit" and deans and college
councils will decide how to allocate an additional 1.2%. Units should not shift their allocation
priorities on the assumption that all compression issues will be solved next Fall.
The Faculty Senate also took time to say goodbye to some of its leaders. Lea Vaughn (Law)
received a standing ovation as she stepped down after six years of service as Secretary of the
Faculty. Donna Kerr (Education) will take up that position.
More thanks went to Ross Heath (Oceanography) who is ending his term as chair of the Senate.
Ashley Emery (Mech. Eng) is the incoming chair.
Gail Stygall (English) served three years as Faculty Legislative Representative and in that
position helped secure what is by all accounts the best university budget in years. David Lovell
(Psychosocial and Community Health) will take her place.
