UW Faculty News- Big Victory in Duane Storti 2% case
Oct 25, 2005
Three years ago, Associate Professor Duane Storti (Mechanical Engineering) sued the University
after President McCormick denied faculty the 2% salary increase that is specified in the
University Handbook. Yesterday the court handed him (and all faculty) a big victory.
Judge Mary Yu issued a summary judgment, ruling that the UW had a mandatory duty to provide the
faculty a 2% minimum annual raise. The University will be required to pay eligible faculty
members the 2% they missed plus pay for what has been lost in subsequent years because that step
was skipped. Beyond the monetary issues, the ruling means that the Faculty Code (University
Handbook) is an enforceable contract and cannot be ignored just because the administration finds
it to be inconvenient.
This is an enormously important ruling: A victory for the Faculty Code and for the framework of
shared governance.
Congratulations Duane, and thank you.
