In spring 2016, WiGS held a discussion with UW anthropology graduate student Dan Grunspan, first author of a popular study demonstrating gender bias in how undergraduates assess their peers’ abilities. We had a interesting fall discussion with insightful UW Philosopher of Science Dr. Carole Lee in fall 2015 about bias in peer review. We discussed how commensuration, the distillation of many qualities into a single metric, can make room for hidden biases about race or gender and can discourage innovation. The …
