Coyote Central is looking for shop assistants to help with our wood & metal classes this fall. This is a paid position, which we are aiming to fill ASAP!
Shop Assistant Position Description
The Shop Assistant is compensated for their time and expertise and asked to support the Teaching Artist in hands-on ways in the classroom. The Shop Assistant is responsible for working with small groups of youth, reviewing demos for students, and ensuring that students are safe with equipment. Ideally, we are looking for someone who is comfortable around shop tools and around kids!
Responsibilities
● Support Teaching Artist in daily classes, including active hands-on work with youth

● Provide an extra set of hands in demonstrations or group activities
● Independently oversee small groups of actively working students
● Help with clean up, set-up and transitions
● Help identify and assist students who may need extra support
● Engage youth with open-ended questions to guide them in critical thinking and finding possible solutions on their own
● Monitor students’ activity and ensure that they s are using equipment safely and as instructed

Qualifications
● Proficiency with hand tools and power tools within the wood and/or metal shop.
● Proficiency with hand tools and power tools within the wood and/or metal shop.
● Ability to safely operate all tools in the shop.
● Willingness to work as a member of a team, taking cues from the Teaching Artist
● Willingness to work as a member of a team, taking cues from the Teaching Artist
● Competency listening to and problem-solving with students of diverse backgrounds
● Ability to initiate conversation with youth rather than waiting for youth to come to you
● Personal integrity and a passion for enriching the lives of youth through creativity
We ask that our youth shop assistants commit to attending ALL sessions of each course. Here are the timeslots we need to fill:
10/21 – 12/9 (skip 11/25)
Saturdays, 1:30-4:30pm
Metal: Mobiles + Kinetic Sculpture
10/4 – 11/29 (skip 11/22)
Wednesdays, 1-3pm
Welding: Metal Sculpture
10/4 – 11/29 (skip 11/22)
Wednesdays, 1-3pm
Wood: Kinetic Sculpture
Compensation
$25 per hour
