    This interdisciplinary symposium, co-sponsored by the University of Ghana’s Department of Philosophy & Classics and the University of Washington’s Department of Bioethics & Humanities, will bring together scholars from Africa and the West to examine how personhood emerges and its implications for the moral status of humans and nonhumans, including AI, animals and nature.

    Dr. Nancy Jecker was awarded the 2025 Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) International BRIDGE Fellowship. The fellowship supports former JSPS International Fellows with an eye to sustaining and growing collaborative research between American and Japanese scholars.

    We are proud to announce a new Summer Seminar in Healthcare Ethics Scholarship this year in honor of Dr. Jim Kirkpatrick, a beloved former SS faculty, Montlake committee chair, and ethics consultant. His unexpected passing in January has left a profound void among us, and his absence is deeply felt throughout the UW Bioethics community.
