Welcome Jeongyong and Alex!

New PhD student joins the lab!

We are excited to welcome two new PhD students, Jeongyong Yang and Alex Samland, to CTRL.

Jeongyong recently completed his M.S. at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where he worked with Professor SooJean Han at the intersection of learning and control theory. At CTRL, he will focus on developing a safety-critical data flywheel to accelerate our understanding of safety in open-world environments.

Alex is returning to graduate school after four years at Outrider, an autonomous trucking startup. He earned his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University, where he completed his thesis on emergent behavior in robotic swarms in Todd Murphey’s lab. At CTRL, he will work on personalized autonomy so autonomous systems can adapt their safety understanding not only to context, but also to the humans they interact with.
