Periodically the UW Design Division conducts a survey of our alumni from the programs of Visual Communication Design, Industrial Design, and Interaction Design. The 2014–2017 survey of B.Design alumni from Industrial Design was conducted online and received a 97% response rate (67 out of 69 graduates). Over the past seven years, the average size of the graduating class in ID has been 17 students. Grey bars indicate student attrition.
Over the past seven years, the ID program has been 56% female and 44% male.
The average age of ID students at graduation is 25. This average has trended downward as more native freshmen are recruited into design.
The first job after graduation is most likely to be full-time design employment (43%) or a design internship (25%).
The majority (54%) of ID alumni find employment within one month after graduation; 40% of ID seniors secured employment during their senior year, before graduation.
On average, 38% of ID juniors had a design internship in the summer before or during their senior year.
Of 105 alumni, 84 are currently employed (three alumni are unemployed, and 18 could not be contacted).
Design employment occurs in corporate organizations (55%), design/ advertising/ marketing consultancies (13%), self-employment/ freelance (12%), and nonprofit organizations (4%).

The majority (75% = 50/67) of ID students come from Washington state. After graduation, approximately half of all alumni (66% = 43/65) remain in Washington, with 55% staying in Seattle. The largest groups of out-of-state alumni are in California (15%, primarily in San Francisco and Los Angeles), and New York City (6%).
