Eco-lawn is a different approach to growing and maintaining a lawn, and has various brand names such as “Eco-turf” or “Ecology lawn” that includes different combinations of plants to achieve a “green lawn” look. Designed to be more environmentally friendly Eco-lawns need less maintenance than a conventional lawn by needing little summer water and generally no supplemental fertilizer after it is established. This is achieved by mixing various turf-type lawn grasses, (such as different types of fescue), and broadleaf perennials that blend together to form a dense lawn-type planting that usually doesn't have as many weeds or pests as the usual Kentucky Blue-Grass lawn mixture. This mix of plants results in a meadow-like lawn, softer and less uniform than a conventional grass lawn that can be left unmown to form more of a “carpet” type look with the variety of plants and textures blending together and flattening during their natural progression. If one prefers the mix of plants can still be mowed like a conventional lawn and usually the plants are designed to be compatible with the uses of a lawn--sitting, strolling, and playing.
Fortunately it is not hard to get the mixtures at a local nursery or off the internet, and application and maintenance is pretty much the same as any other lawn, except that in the long run maintenance will reduce over time.
