The goal of LID is to retain the hydrologic characteristics of each
site, improve stormwater quality, maintain downstream stability, and
reduce the need for conventional stormwater management and conveyance
systems. Low Impact Development is a concept that utilizes integrated
management practices (IMPs). These IMPs are a flexible set of strategies
that can be applied to any development project, regardless of scale.
Generally, however, these strategies are best applied to newly developed
sites. Existing developments must be retrofitted and may be more expensive.
For detail about specific LID technologies see the “Construction
and Siting Issues” section.
