Pritchard Beach Wetland demonstrates how the design and construction of wetland habitats in an urban context can be successful despite a variety of challenges. The partnership between landscape architect Charles Anderson, client Starflower Foundation and project manager Seattle Parks Department provided a unique opportunity to reestablish the area’s wetland functions and create an outdoor environmental classroom. Differing restoration approaches and management practices resulted in some adaptations to the landscape architect’s original design intent, and limited funding has prevented the design from being fully realized. However, the project overall has been a success. Since its construction in 1996, native plant communities have successfully established throughout the site, providing habitat for birds, amphibians, and small mammals. Pritchard Beach Wetland has become an outdoor classroom for neighborhood schools and community groups aspiring to learn about the benefits of urban wetlands.
