The natural duff layer and topsoil was saved during construction in order to retain the existing mycorrhizal fungi to aid in plant re-establishment. Native plants were salvaged from the site and replanted along with the new plantings.

Topsoil was stockpiled using sustainable landscape construction practices such as small, elongate mounds space approximately 3' apart to allow wind to pass through. This method of stockpiling the soil helped limit wind erosion and desiccation. Duff from adjacent forest community was added to soil for new plantings.
