Applicability

Structural soil can be used as a base material under pavement designed to accommodate pedestrian and lighter vehicular traffic. The soil is truly beneficial when trees are planted in a paved environment since the soil is designed to solve the conflict between compacted soils for safe pavement installation and tree growth needs. Appropriate usage includes, but is not limited to: sidewalks, pedestrian malls, parking lots, urban plazas, and possibly some low-use access roads with planted trees. Structural soils are often used underneath and the surrounding of planting areas. Structural soils can be used as base material and/or sub-base for the entire pavement area or partial installment for retrofitting.
