Cost Issues

  • High Construction Cost : Structural soil tends to require more excavation and/or removal of existing soil compare to conventional methods and materials. This causes increase of cost. Also, removal of old soil is often around existing utilities, which requires special attentions and care.
  • High Labor Cost : Part of the cost involved is the contractors’ learning curve and “new product phobia.” Complex measurements and testing increases training needs and learning curve cost. It could be improved over time according to the popularity of the product.
  • Potential Risk : Projects with structural soils sometimes use irrigation system to support plantings. However, failure of the irrigation system results in costly repairs although this can be avoided by placing irrigation along the concrete slab.
