Since its inception, UW Medicine has had a tradition of service to needy populations. Cooperative efforts throughout the five-state region of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho have made community service an inseparable part of UW medical education. Service activities extend beyond the region, as faculty and students use their experience, talents, and resources to address health problems in developing countries. Involvement in community service during medical school has had a lasting influence on many UW School of Medicine graduates, from those who practice medicine in rural towns to those who assume national and international leadership positions.
