Global WACh Shares Novel Research Findings at International Conferences
Over Fall quarter, Global WACh researchers shared novel research findings from our three scientific priority areas (HIV Through the Lifecycle, Family Planning and Decision Support, and Gut Health and Child Survival) at several international conferences: The HIV Prevention for HIV Conference (HIVR4P), Union World Conference on Lung Health, and American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention research at HIVR4P

Members of the PEPFAR/DREAMS-funded implementation program, PrEP Implementation for Young Women and Adolescents (PrIYA), presented recent scientific findings at the HIV Prevention for HIV Conference (HIVR4P) held on October 21-25, 2018 in Madrid, Spain. HIVR4P is the only global scientific conference dedicated exclusively on biomedical HIV prevention research. The conference supports global cross-fertilization among research on HIV vaccines, microbicides, PrEP, treatment as prevention, and other biomedical prevention approaches. Six abstracts containing novel data was accepted for poster and oral presentations:
- Acceptance of HIV self-tests for male partners among pregnant and postpartum women in maternal child health (MCH) clinics in Kenya (Presented by Dr. Jillian Pintye, Senior Fellow, DGH)
- Early PrEP continuation among young women in routine maternal child health and family planning clinics in Kenya (Presented by Dr. Kenneth Mugwanya, Senior Fellow, DGH)
- High PrEP awareness among Kenyan young people in high HIV burden counties (Presented by Dr. Jillian Pintye)
- No Association Found Between Prenatal PrEP Use and Adverse Infant Outcomes: Results From a Large PrEP Implementation Science Program in Kenya (Presented by Julia Dettinger, PrIYA Research Coordinator)
- PrEP Side-effects and Discontinuation in Pregnant and Non-Pregnant Women (Presented by Dr. Jillian Pintye)
- Pregnancy PrEP exposure not associated with adverse infant outcomes (Presented by Julia Dettinger)

Addressing HIV and TB co-infections at The Union

The Union World Conference on Lung Health (also known as The Union) is the world’s largest gathering of several key stakeholders working to end the suffering caused by lung disease, with a focus specifically on the challenges faced by low- and lower-middle income populations. The conference was held from October 24-27, 2018 in The Hague, The Netherlands. Three abstracts by Global WACh researchers and colleagues were featured at the conference. Improving child health outcomes research at ASTMH

Researchers from the Gut Health and Child Survival priority area look forward to the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH) conference every year. ASTMH is the largest international scientific organization of experts dedicated to reducing the worldwide burden of tropical infectious diseases and improving global health. This year’s annual meeting was from October 28–November 1, 2018 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
