Congratulations to the research administrative team at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and UW/Global WACh for receiving a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) G11 award to build pre-award grants management processes at KNH by leveraging an over 30 years long collaborative research partnership between KNH and UW.

KNH is the largest teaching and referral hospital, as well as the leading site for clinical research in Kenya.  Due to limited research administration capacity, KNH researchers act as subcontractors on grant awards with UW to conduct high-level scientific investigations in Kenya. The G11 award will strengthen KNH’s research administration team to lead pre-award grant activities, such as identifying opportunities and submitting applications, in addition to currently managing funding, and completing all compliance and post-award activities.

Two senior administrators, Emmaculate Nzove and Catherine Maina, plan to receive hands-on training opportunities at the UW (with support from Global WACh’s Grant and Program Manager, Kellie List) and National Institutes of Health to aid in developing pre-award processes and implementing a “train-the-trainer” model to expand training capacity of other research administrators at KNH and other Kenyan institutions that receive NIAID funding.  They plan to share their expertise through job training, mentorship, and participation in a research administrators’ community of practice.  Dr. John Kinuthia, Deputy Director Research and Programs Department at KNH, will support the administrators and institutionalize the new processes to catalyze future research and training programs.

We look forward to sharing future updates about this exciting new partnership.
