Global Quest Invitational

Activity: Global Quest Invitational

Dates: The activities will take place from November 15 – December 14, 2012.

Theme: Students will address the following theme
(taken from a goal written by the RDFZ XISHAN School):

"My contributions bring happiness to people."

Entries: include the following:

Students, individually or in teams of up to 3 individuals, create media and text which address the theme above and post this on MakeWaves' Global Quest network (a network within MakeWaves that is restricted to participants in this pilot). The format for MakeWaves is the completion of what they call "Stories."

Students may upload Stories in one of two formats:

  1. Upload 1-3 images created by students (photograph or scanned original art work) that are followed by text of up to 500 words
  2. Upload a video created by students of 3 minutes or less followed by two or three sentences stating the message or response intended from the audience

As part of the Story, all entries of either format must have a Title and an Introductory Statement.

21st Century Skills:
Communication & Collaboration

Feedback - The expectation of each School/organization is that teachers will create opportunities on the MakeWaves Global Quest Network site for students to view other students' work and provide feedback by clicking that they "Like" the work and/or by writing a comment.

Blog - Students are also encouraged to reflect on the process by writing in the Blog a statement about what they learned and/or an idea(s) about how to make the activity better in the future.

Core Rules for Project

  1. All students must be ages 12 – 18
  2. Each organization registers on MakeWaves and registers the participating students and the teachers/coaches responsible for them
  3. Teachers serve as coaches or guides for student work but all submissions are by students
  4. Each organization accepts responsibility for approving the final upload of each student's work to the Global Quest Network "My Contribution" channel. This responsibility includes assurance that the work is original and that there are no issues of copyright infringement. Each organization gives its assurance of following the conditions of use established by MakeWaves.

Entry Rubrics

Each teacher will approve or deny each entry by each of their students. The directors of this pilot (listed by MakeWaves as the Network Publishers) will periodically review these approvals for consistency across schools/organizations.

The Stories accepted by each teacher will be posted in the Global Quest Network's "My Contributions" Channel for viewing by all other students in all other Pilot schools/organizations.

Each of the Stories should meet the following criteria:

  1. Be in English
  2. Be writing and media created by the students. Students must take their own digital photographs and video or create their own art work that is done either digitally or by hand and scanned for submission.
  3. Be appropriate for students ages 12 and higher
  4. Demonstrate the student's individual thinking about the theme
  5. Offer compelling visuals to support the student's ideas
